The fact that China and Japan tend to "dominate" the view of Asia that many foreigners seem to have could be explained reasonably easily. Here's my hypothesis:
People 'know' China. It's that huge country with the highest population count, internet censorship and the great wall, etc.
People 'know' Japan, too - it's that small, densely populated place where all the electronics, cartoons and weird things come from.
I don't mean to offend anybody, but compared to these two with their relative fame/infamy (whichever suits the occasion), other Asian countries kinda fade into the background, don't they?
But I digress. Sorry.
