I completely agree with this!! Where I live, people aren't very open to "different" things, and will bash you for it without thinking twice. Like, if it's not on the t.v. or radio, you can't like it. T_T
To be honest, it was the looks! Not because I
liked the way they looked, but because I wanted to hear what kind of music they played. I had never seen Visual Kei before (7th grade when I discovered it :P) so I was curious to find out what their sound was like. At that time I had listened to mostly British pop/rock, so I was pretty creeped out (in a good way haha) when I clicked on a picture of the GazettE, leading to their Filth in the Beauty PV
It's been three years since then, and I've listened to nothing but VK bands, and eventually I made my way over to jpop. I love Japanese music because it's WAY different from the stuff you would hear in America. Not just the looks, but the whole composition of their music is different. And especially the lyrics. They're so poetic and detailed. They make you think, and to me, that's pretty damn amazing.
When it comes to telling people, only my family and close friends know. My family hates that everything I like is Japanese, or related to Japanese culture, so I tend to feel like an outsider even around them. :X
At school, everyone is just crazed Kesha and Katy Perry fans. It's actually very annoying, but I like that my interests and taste in music are different from theirs. But I don't think of myself as special or anything just because of that, I wanted to clear that up before people get the wrong impression of me. >_<
