In Rugby you cant tackle someone in the air. You cant touch any part of the head or neck. You cant use your feet. The only way you can get your opponent to the ground is via grabbing them and using their momentum using techniques that resemble Judo or via the textbook, round the waist tackle.
Also, interfering with someone that doesnt have the ball is a major offence as is obstructing the defence from getting to the player who does have the ball.
In the end what Im saying is that American football is more contact heavy than Rugby and NEEDS the armour.
Both sports are pretty tough...
