And you should probably look into getting an electronic dictionary. A lot of the stores in the tourist-heavy areas have English-speaking staff members who can help you out with that.
Also, anticipate that food here will cost more and so will going out :3 A lot of the exchange students I know are completely broke now because they didn't anticipate that at all.

Yeah, buying the electronic dictionary it a very good idea. I have been playin around with mines and it has proven its neccessity.
Hopefully I will not end up like the exchange students you mention. I received alot of scholarships money to support everything while I am there plus alot extra. So I not really worried about but I will still keep on guard
Alot of people here are going to Tokyo on exchange. I am really glad I am staying in Kyoto. Alot less people there, and i heard it more people friendly.
