When I was in high school I had to learn French for five years and left school only knowing a few words and now I don't remember anything of the language. In my opinion, classes are not really the best way of learning another language but it depends on how good the teacher is. I tried text books when I decided to self study Japanese about two years ago and some have helped. I bought Rosetta Stone for Japanese a year ago, very expensive but worth it. I like how it works and it's a fun way of learning a language. A fast way to learn Japanese is to immerse as much as you can.
