Last things first, no race is a unusual sight in Tokyo. White, black, brown, whatever, nothing turns heads.

I think it is realistic to think you can learn some basic Japanese in two months, and participate in the most simple of conversations. "Where is the grocery store?" "Go straight down the street and turn left at the bank." Those kinds of things.

Living in Japan by next year you may be able to participate in more complicated conversations.
