I think I would say:

"I had a lovely surprise when I bumped into my friend on my way home."

Or "I saw my friend when I was walking home."

I prefer the first sentence.

"As I was walking home, I bumped into my friend."

As I was on my way home, I met an old friend I haven't seen for ages.

We usually say this sort of thing when we meet up with someone we might not have seen for ages.

In other words, it was not a planned meeting.

. I ran into her while I was walking home.
2. I ran into her while walking home.

either of those would be all right I guess.

"When I was walking home the other day I met an old friend I haven't seen for a while."
