Wow, this is the first time I heard this. I think that Japanese manga sales in the USA begun around 2000.
When I traveled to the USA in 1994. I wish I could find DBZ (Dragon Ball) action figures there, but what I could found is only X-Men (and as 3nd grader, I don't even know the word "Marvel"), then what else?
When I went to Toy R Us. I see something I familiar with (eventhough I don't interested in it). I saw 6-colored sentai in the store. The problem is I've never known the name "Mighty Morphin Power Ranger" (Actually I don't think I can read it back then), but I think their jumpsuit look familiar (Juranger which is Japanese ver. of 1st season Power Ranger aired in Thailand a year before I traveled in the states). Oh! eventhough I've never been a big fan of sentai so much (I've watched some episode of Jetman though), Power Ranger toys is the most familiar looking merchandises in my eyes so I will buy it, because I know nothing else in the Toy R Us.
What the ..... is SNES!?, I know only Super Famicom. (to be honest I didn't even know what SNES catridge look like until the dotcom boom haha.)
