One of my biggest influences into getting into manga was the short lived Mangajin magazine. This was a monthly magazine that took pages from manga to use as introductions to Japanese culture and pop culture. Instead of learning Japanese to read manga I was reading manga to learn Japanese. The magazine was published from 1990 to 1996.

So really, don't listen when people tell you scanlators brought manga to North America. It simply isn't true, and it is an insult to the pioneering publishers who dared bring these very different titles to a new audience in the West.
