I am going to go against what Ronin said on this one when it comes to buildings - It isn`t to placate the spirits. It`s to get their blessing for the building, and to get them to look over / protect the construction. Also, it is to clear the area of any bad entities that might attach themselves to the building to bring bad luck.

Its what I meant... but I guess placate wasnt a good choice of words as it implies that the spirits are naturally restless I guess.
