How do you guys answer when others ask you this question?

' <-- like that, when I say I'm taking a Japanese class this fall semester in college. Since I don't really have plans on moving or living in Japan or teaching there AND the fact that Japanese class 1, 2, and 3 don't fulfill any graduation units [only 4, 5, do ].. my peers are kind of taken aback LOL.
I've always liked the language, culture and entertainment (dramas, anime, music) too. All their skepticism and "dissaprovement" kind of discourages me a little, to be honest. And I know very well that learning Spanish would be better (I live in California, and since I want to become a Dentist.. it would help; I do plan on learning it too).
What are your reasons?
