1. find a copy of Kanji in Context—it won't be cheap, but it will be cheaper than a textbook
2. start cramming from the beginning at some pace you choose (say, 5 kanji's worth of words per day) using Anki on the computer
3. after a couple months, check to see how your long-term retention is doing (Anki tracks this)—if it's at least 80%, increase how many you do per day

I've added about 5000 vocabulary words in the past few months doing this. In the process, I've almost learned all the joyo kanji.
