はい、そうです。
「そうか」は ていねいでは ありません。
so, if you use both ways,it doesn't sound very good.
but you can use「そうか(!)」(sounds like talking to yourself) to show your " ! " feelings.
When you are talking to some Japanese business man in Japanese
I would recommend「なるほど」

わかりました! <-------- (polite! ^^)
I don't know ALL terms of grammar, not that much actually. Since I'm Dutch

Yes わかりました is ていねいご, one of the polite ways.
I don't want to scare you (haha), but there are a few polite forms (I mean like... the politest-very polite-polite-polite enough...something like that , I'm sure there should be grammartical terms for it!)
I guess I have been using English too much here,
I realize here is the place for "Only Japanese".
