Funny if you think about it. In all the places I have been to, when I say I'm from California people always express a desire to visit or live here. As a state it has it's ups and downs but there are some really great things you should get to know and explore before you jump ship! Try San Francisco for example.
If you won't divulge the city, are you on the coast or inland? Most of the Californians I know who hate where they grew up were either inland or in some dismal part of LA.
To answer the question: when I was a young girl I wanted long straight black Asian girl hair very badly. I also thought as an 8 year old that I was going to live in an amazing Japanese fantasy future on my flying pirate ship spacecraft.
At one point in my life I thought I'd like to live there but once I made some female Japanese friends and learned more about the social dynamic of being a female in Japan - no I don't want to be Japanese and I would not want to live there as a citizen. Some of the workplace sexual harassment I've heard from my friends astonishes me. And even though it is a place known for wild youth culture, I am no longer a youth and I don't feel like I'd ever feel my odd self would fit in and feel at home.
But I do love being in the country as a foreign visitor! I try to go once a year.
