this might help aswell, you'll hear the "the japanese r sounds like l,d and r but somewhere inbetween" its usually not described very well by what that actually means...

when you ra notice where your tongue is in your mouth, then say la and da...notice how your tongue hits the roof of your mouth? when pronoucing the japanese R sound your tongue should be somewhere inbetween were your tongue makes the L and D sounds
