Actually, it's fairly easy to switch back and forth;
You'll see a new bar at the top of all the programs you type with (like the top of your browser) you should see 入力モード, clicking on it, you'll see the following options;
ひらがな(H) -- Hiragana mode, this is the one you'll use for typing in Japanese as you can also to type in katakana (type the katakana word in hiragana, press the space bar and it'll turn into katakana, you'll also do this for kanji words; あいすくりーむ *press space* ---> アイスクリーム; とうきょう *press space* ---> 東京)
全角カタカナ(K) Full width katakana, though you don't really need this mode since ひらがな(H) does the katakana words.
全角英数(L) Full width ASCII/English coding, types like this; Ｓｅｅ？ Ｉｔ’ｓ ｊｕｓｔ ａｎｏｔｈｅｒ Ｅｎ ｇｌｉｓｈ ｆｏｎｔ， ｆｕｎ ｔｏ ｕｓｅ ｔｈ ｏｕｇｈ ｎｏｔ ｎｅｓｓｅｃａｒｙ ｆｏｒ ａｎ ｙｔｈｉｎｇ Ｉ ｃａｎ ｔｈｉｎｋ ｏｆ．
半角カタカナ(A) Half width Katakana, like this; ﾍﾛｰ･ｴｳﾞﾘﾊﾞﾃﾞｨ
半角英数(P)
直接入力(D) -- D is for 'direct', this is the mode you'll use for writing in English (it's the mode I'm using right now)
Though I'll warn you, certain programs will be in Japanese after you do this! My anti-virus and some software updates are in Japanese now.
