I also do not see how あい is two syllables... The current discussion is wayyyy beyond me, but I don't think many English speakers would be able to hear two syllables either. When I try to say it with two syllables it sounds like I am overemphasizing the い as if they are separated.

I've always understood words like あい to be one syllable, two moras.
