The worst are the compound fractures on a joint, like what happened to my right elbow.
Even after a year of physio, I lost around 45 degrees in my range of motion. I also hear an audible click each time I twist my arm as the scar tissue snaps against the stainless steel plates. Because my bone was crushed into around 20 pieces, it never fused together so I had to undergo a bone graft 8 months later.
Thankfully, my bone has healed so I'll be able to climb this summer.

wow you are so brave to attempt that even if you had a fully functional arm. I admire you
I'd love to see any xrays or anything you have of that fracture, out of curiosity!
What does a bone graft entail, sounds cringeworthy.
Makes you even the more brave for getting back out there, mine is nothing compared to yours, and I shy away from any physical activity like that for fear of it happening again because I know I would not cope.
