The movie that wins Best Picture usually wins Best Director. It's only logical. A badly-directed movie won't stand a chance at Best Picture. If a movie is really good enough to win Best Picture it's because of how the director filmed it, so it's only fair it gets both awards. And since we're on the subject I'll just throw in something I've been wanting to say for a while... AVATAR SHOULD HAVE WON EVERY FREAKING CATEGORY IT HAD A NOMINATION FOR. Cause... honestly, it was freaking awsome and deserved no less. I'd like to see any of the other nominees from last year attempting to direct a movie like AVATAR the way James Cameron did it... psh. To me he was the true winner.
