The very real possibility that tens of thousands of people have just died a horrific death in your own country is by definition, a big deal. There are a lot of people in Tokyo (and elsewhere in Japan) that have family in the affected areas. There are even more that have friends in that area.
A partial meltdown (or possible meltdown) of three nuclear reactors that are only about 150 miles from your city is also a big deal.
As for downplaying, I don't see that. I see a nation acting with a high amount of calm and civility. Frankly I'm proud to be married to one of them.
