I'm having this exact problem, only thing is that I'm leaving next Friday.

The main problem is that I follow the news from several sources (because I'm worried about my trip) but that my family and friend just watch the news on the TV.
The news is mostly about ratings, it has been a while since a hot item like the Japan earthquake came along, so they'll just tell anything bad about it, and exaggerate a bit.

Luckily I have a niece who lives in Tokyo, and she told me everything is okay as long as you avoid the disaster-area. This helps a lot convincing my family that I'll be okay
