Given that, then why is that the GDP is always the compared data when the press and netizens claim that China is outpacing the rest of the world's economies? We have to use it if we are going to comment on those stories.

Yes, the US lost. We withdrew not only because the American public was fed up with the expense in lives, materials and money, but because Westmoreland and McNamara finally admitted they could not win against a Chinese-backed North Vietnam. If it were not for them, it would not have dragged on so long.
