I too picked up on the use of the word Oriental and cringed. Good work on having the gall to pick up on it MMM
I'd say learn some more cultural sensitivity before going any further on either language, however if you are already on your way in Japanese and came to a Japanese Forum to asks, seems to me your mind was already made up.
If you learn enough Kanji you can take a guess at some simple written Chinese as a bonus prize anyway I find.
