I think it's worth noting that Japanese marriage certificates are recognized as "official" by the US. The reason that is important is because as far as I know, getting a spousal visa in Japan requires a marriage certificate from your country (as well as a Japanese one). So in the case of an American, the Japanese marriage certificate is recognized by the US as being official, so they technically don't need an American marriage certificate. However, I've heard that for Chinese, even if they've been married in China, Japan doesn't recognize it, so to be officially married in Japan they need to get married once more.
I'm not sure if that will apply to the OP... but I think it very well may. I would look into whether or not a marriage certificate from your country will get you a marriage certificate in Japan. If I understand correctly, you'll be getting married in India, so you'll get some kind of Indian documentation for your marriage. Sometimes they require a translation of such documents. I think you'd be much better off talking to a Japanese embassy in your country or an Indian embassy in Japan.
