This is so no true. And just because I have some time to kill I will give you a few examples:

Stephen Moyer, plays Bill in True Blood, I was shocked to death when I found out he was actually British cause in the series he speaks with a perfectly fine American accent.

Natascha McElhone, plays Karen in Californication, and not in a million years would have I guessed she was British cause she is perfectly capable of switching to an American accent and does so very naturally in the show.

Hugh Laurie aka Dr. House. Also British. Again, doesn't seem to have a problem "hiding" his "awful" British accent when portraying House.

There's many more but you get the idea.

And again, Americans don't hide their accents, you just don't notice much of one because you are used to the standard American accent and it sounds more common and natural to you, but it isn't so beacuse they speak better English, it's all a matter of what you are used to hearing, nothing more.
It's not about the accents Suki.. it's about the English language.

It is extremely difficult to understand what most British people are trying to tell you.. where however most Americans are easy to understand.

the thing I was trying to say is, that I would like to understand my teacher.

I think most Japanese people would agree with me here, don't you think?
