1. Grave of the Fireflies (glad to see it's already been mentioned)
2. Ghost is the Shell (the first Mamoro Oshii movie)
3. Appleseed
4. Appleseed: Ex Machina
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion
6. Mobile Suit Gundam (the series that started it all)
I don't normally mention these but Genshiken, The Melancholy/Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya and Gintama are also worth a look.
