Intimidation has nothing to do with imperialism.. while Ryzorian was only joking around, I like to say that he got the key point of it, most of it is coming from fear.. many of them are worry that the foreigner may walk up to them to ask a question, much of it coming from the fear of a communication barrier... there is also the fear that can be trace back as the reminance of the war. I still have a book at home that talks about how the Japanese consider American as the big bully that just come in and over power them, when they see a white boy, they don't care if its American or Australian, they just assume.... then there is the fear of the cultural difference...

Of course, if its a stare or glance from the Yakuza or some traditional old man, it will just mean "Get out of my country"
