So, next question. The author was asked to write a 風景論, but he recalled a memory from Japan's day of surrender, and decided to write a little about that (少し書いたぐらいでは、永年かくしていたことを、そ� �でしゃべったことにはならない気もするので、この機� �にそのことを書いておく).
The context is the author talking about １９４５年８月１５日, and how some people call it 「日本の一番長い日」, others call it 「日本の一番短い日」, 悲しい日, etc.
My question is about this sentence in particular: 誰もが話せばながい短いの差はあっても一篇の掌篇ぐら いになりそうな経験はもちあわせていようと思う。
I'm parsing the sentence as:
誰もが話せば = If everyone speaks,
ながい短いの差はあっても even if there's a difference between long and short
一篇の掌篇ぐらいになりそうな経験は an experience amounting to one short piece of writing
もちあわせていようと思う。 [??] is wanting/thinking/planning to have
So I see 一篇の掌篇ぐらいになりそうな経験はもちあわせていよ うと思う as something like the author wants everyone to share his experience, which amounts to just about one short story in length. Right?
The first half confuses me even more. 誰もが話せばながい短いの差はあっても
If everyone speaks, even if there's a difference between "long" and "short"? I don't understand!
Is there an idiom in there I am missing?「誰もが話せば」の意味は何でしょうか。
As a side note, the word リヤカー keeps showing up in the story, and I didn't fully understand what this was until I, serendipitously, watched 火垂るの墓 two days ago.
