I happen to know someone who had a felony drug conviction and they had no problem getting into Japan for the 90 tourist days. Never tried to get any other visa, so I have no idea how that would have worked out for them.

I'm so glad to hear that someone you know personally, with the same situation, had no problem. It's quite a relief. That does make sense that they would only look into it more for long term visas.
We are only concerned about landing for a 2 week trip. That would be stupid to deny us entry, I'm sure they want our tourist money.
