Even if they are doing something they personally do not agree with, I still feel they deserve respect at the very least for volunteering.

In my book as soon as you start killing, regardless of your intensions, the only thing you deserve is jailtime. Certainly not respect. It doesn't matter who you are, everybody always has at least 2 choices. Soldiers can also say, 'No I'm not going to kill, screw the goverment!' But they're not doing that.
A lot of soldiers are not that much different than terrorists.
