This will depend on your level of Japanese. Which is why I recommend becoming fluent in Japanese before you go (yes, before you go). It will save HEAPS and HEAPS of trouble.
I don't know what country you're from, but if you're from America/European countries I guess it will be no big deal.
However, if you're Chinese or Korean.....then.....be prepared to see a lot of anti-Korean, anti-Chinese rallies in the big cities.

You will not be able to socialize with Japanese people with basic Japanese. "Basic" Japanese is pretty much worse than a 3 year old's Japanese. Why would a Japanese person want to talk to you if you're not close to fluent? It will just be very superficial stuff of course. Do you have the patience to talk to someone who can't speak English? Hang out with them?
I was in Japan and my Japanese was garbage at that time, and I was able to hang out with a Japanese local, but the only reason that ever happened was because he was a good friend of my aunt. That's the only reason. If that wasn't the case he wouldn't talk to me.
