Something to be aware of - bicycle laws are at least partially at the discretion of each prefecture and city.
In Aichi - or Nagoya, can`t remember which - it is legal to ride a bicycle on the pavement. (The laws for scooters is also supposed to be slightly different, but as I don`t have one and never have I don`t know how they differ.)

When I got my driver`s license (and every time I renew it) it was pointed out to us to be aware that some of the things legal for a bicycle in this area do not apply in other areas, so check the local laws if we move.
