In nuance, it is more like "I never expected that I would end up dancing!"
or "I never could have expected ~~~."
「~~ことになる」 does not always involve a decision made by someone else. More often, it describes the
consequence of general circumstances or a course of events.
This is the difference between 「ことになる」 and 「ことにする」, the latter of which always involves a decision actively made by the person in question.
