It seems like it. Newer K-pop seems to be superior quality than newer J-pop, but older J-pop from the 80s is great stuff. Japanese have the Koreans beat when it comes to diversity of music: Bossa Nova, Jazz, Hip-hop, and traditional stuff like Enka. I love Japanese songs from the 60s and 70s too; not sure what the genre is called.
