Now I've been to see the Big Buddha at Toudaiji in Nara twice now, and plan on once more before I head back to the States. All in all, it was quite impressive, the extensive grounds were great, and if nothing else the shear hugeness of the thing was a sight to behold. However, I have yet to compare it with the Kamakura Daibutsu (having never been to Kantou), but going by all the photos I've seen, the sculpting of the Kamakura colossus looks superior.
Can anyone who's been to both give me their impressions?
Of bodies chang'd to various forms, I sing:
Ye Gods, from whom these miracles did spring,
Inspire my numbers with coelestial heat;
'Till I my long laborious work compleat
