The gore can be nasty in a shokcing kind of way, the nudity actually tones down in later episodes. Certain things depicted in anime would make some folks uncomfortable and when that happens they loose interest in what ever the storyline may be.

Elfen Lied was very interesting, but it touched upon many taboos... even for anime.
