Question about a scene in Howl's Moving Castle

Early on, in the movie Howl's Moving Castle, when Sophie has just entered the castle there is a scene where she starts to cook breakfast for herself and Markl. Then Howl arrives (from the black door) and takes over the cooking chore from her. In this scene he takes the skillet from her and seems to purposely touch her hand while doing so. There is even a close-up of this happening. What is the significance of this?

I think he did it so he could see who she was exacley and see if she was a witch or not. and if she had a curse on her. If you read the novel there is so much more deatil such as to whats behind the black portal.

Sounds plausible.

Thank you. I have the book on my "wish" list but haven't purchased it yet. I just may go ahead and do that . . . .
