Is anime in Japan as popular as in the western countries?
Well, is it? Here in Canada, so many people like anime/manga, including white people and Asians.

People like their shows, watch every week, and move on. The One Piece tankobons are breaking records for sales in Japan, selling millions of copies a volume. To compare, in the US if a tankobon sells 10,000 copies it is considered a great success. |
I`ll use the wonderful example I always use.
Manga is merely a form of media in Japan. It isn`t a genre on it`s own. Like... Magazines. A magazine is a type of media. It isn`t a genre on it`s own. There are people who love such and such magazine, or who enjoy magazines on some subject, etc... But you don`t find many people who run around liking magazines simply "because they`re magazines!!!! OMG!!!!". You don`t find many people in Japan who love anime or manga JUST because it`s anime or manga. |
This question interests me as well because I have met several Japanese people who claim to have never heard of many of the anime and manga I ask them about. It's distressing. I met this middle aged guy named Naruto who had had never heard of the manga Naruto and this guy name Kenji who said he had never heard of anyone even being named Naruto.
BTW I have never seen nor read Naruto myself. And Naruto is not the only manga I have asked about. I just kind of figured that it was like someone never having heard of Superman or Batman. C'mon, you've at least heard of them. |
Tturtle: Maybe you should try asking about an older series or one that most everyone seems to know about, like say, Sazae-san or Doraemon, as opposed to more recent series (compared to the two I just mentioned).

I'd say it is about the same as here in America. Some love it, some hate it, some think it's okay, some don't care. It's like a Japanese person asking if cartoons are popular in America. :P

Hmm. I feel embarrassed myself about an incident with my boss. When I first met her, she was giving a whole bunch of us an orientation. I just knew she was Japanese, and I was beyond excited, as she is the first Japanese person I met after falling completely in love with the culture, anime, manga and the language. She asked me what made me interested in Japanese. I said, "Bleach." I was completely confident she would know what I was talking about. She gave me a totally blank look, but quickly changed to one of pretend understanding. I was completely embarrassed, and I think she was embarrassed for me. Thinking, "American girl thinking all Japanese people know anime/manga like 'all Japanese people know karate.'"

Well there wasn't anime stuff everywhere [except for bloody Evangelion!] but I do stumble across quite a few anime watching KeyHole.
SSJup81 hit the nail on the head. It's like if I said"Have you been watching OOO?" they wouldn't know what I was talking about but if I asked if they liked Kamen Rider,Super Sentai,Zubat,Japanese Spiderman, then I should get a response. |
