How many Kanji can you read? =D
Heya all, Im new here so thought Id post =D
Anyway, Im a 15-turning-16 year old high school student in Year 10. I study Japanese and in this first term I have managed to be able to recognise 200 kanji. Just so you know the record at my school is 300, set by a year 12 a few years back. Now I am wondering.... how many can you all read? In other words, I would like to know if I am going well =D |
Well, there are 1945 jouyou kanji so you're about a tenth of the way through.
Once you have a fair amount of vocabulary and can recognise around 1000 or so kanji you will be able to make some sense of Japanese writing. 300 kanji should take you to about Japanese Language Proficiency Test level 3. You won't be able to read very much with that though. Oh, and don't forget that being able to recognise kanji is significantly easier than being able to write kanji. |
I can recognize a few, like man, woman, dog, big. I am awed by your progress. :P Working on writing, too.

not very many.
heart, dog, person, and a few others I can't recall. |
I know about 1000, which is somewhere around "semi-literate". Going to be taking JLPT Level 2 this coming December. This comes from two years of formal, non-intensive Japanese classes at my home university, as well as one year of intensive courses while studying at a university in Japan (I've lived there for a bit longer than a year, though). My speaking is near fluent now, but I'm hoping to become completely literate within 2 years.

I can only read and write about 100 kanji so far, but I will study more! I want to know at least 2,000.
