He means that you should learn from someone whose first language is English, not from another English student.

You should probably seek someone that is a native English speaker, as they'll be able to correct you and such. If I had more time on my hands, I'd volunteer.

It's probably like 'the blind leading the blind' as a metaphor(?)

It's better to have someone on the surface pulling you out of a hole than to be in the same hole as someone else and try to get out together'

You could also say that in having two people in a hole, progress of one becomes a headache for the other....
