Hello Kitty now official ambassador of Japan...Umm No joke...

When I first read those headlines I thought "okay, that's not that funny", but it's actually true. Hello Kitty is the official tourism ambassador of Japan. Check out this article to find out why in the hell Japan would actually do that and why it's a sweet idea:

That appears to be a joke news site.. like the onion.
It's not true 'till I read it on wikipedia. that's the only info you can REALLY trust.

The Associated Press: Hello Kitty is named Japan tourism ambassador

Also, wikipedia is a free for all site, MOST articles on Wiki are based on thrid party info, don't rely on it too much:)

Yep it's a surreal world we live in, but it does appear to be true! :D

United Press International: Cartoon cat to be ambassador for Japan

It's no joke. They made another cartoon, Doraemon, I think, ambassador of safety. xDDD

Well, at least cartoon characters are easier to edit than people. And there is an entire generation that sees Hello Kitty as a positive image of Japan. It nice to see they can have a sense of humor and recognize the usefulness, even if it is more like a Mascot than what the title Ambassador used to convey.

Maybe its a question of semantics?

I was being sarcastic about wikipedia, although I am a fanboy of it..
So.. that one website the OP posted. I guess it's like real news, but intentionally bad journalism. Interesting. And.. how exactly is an ambassador a fictional character? Think of how easy it would be to hire an impostor.. you could get anywhere. Wait.. THAT'S how I'll get to japan!
