I just read this on the Wiki page made me "lol".

"Recently, with the maid cafe scene booming, additional related services have become popular. These include ear cleaning (耳かき, Mimikaki), a foot or hand massage, or a photography session (the customer typically rents time in a studio during which he can tell a maid which costume to wear and how to pose). Not only can you take pictures with the maids but also, certain cafe's have special performances. With the new game consoles, some cafes also have gaming time when you can ask your favourite maid to play with you but there are also traditional games such as "Jankenpon" (じゃんけんぽん), which is Rock, Paper, Scissors. Akihabara even features a "maid megane" (maid optician)."

Too funny. But wtf is a "Maid Optician". I reckon it would be funny as to go.

Think about the maids. Poor girls.
I don't mind having fun or wanting to surrounded by beautiful women... But 'photography session'?
That's just too much. heh

Hey, they're doing a job and getting paid - so I don't feel sorry for them... The photo sess. seems a bit weird at first, but when you think about it - it's just hiring a model really (which ofcourse you can do anywhere, with specified clothes..)

I don't see the real upside with going to a maidcafé or whatever though, I'd just feel weird as hell in such a place.

Edit: I will, however, go photograph one :)

In Japan, uniforms are considered sexy. Thus, the maid cafes and girlie magazines with girls in uniform. Why? Probably because almost every company makes the employees wear a uniform. You go to a bank and the teller wears somewhat professional garb. IN Japan theres a uniform with (for Kiyo Ginko for example) a navy blue skirt and vest, a white pin-stripe blouse and a funky-ass matching tie thing. Nude color hose and conservative black shoes, no nail polish other than a few sanctioned colors. Men wear suits.

Lots of men think the french maid costume is sexy, which is why they are featured every halloween for adult women. Hostess clubs are normal, too. o why not make money off some dude's fantasy?

never been to one, but spent plent of time in a local snack-bar. Once yu become "uchi" they are the best japanese lessons.

Yes, they may be getting paid for it, but that doesn't necessarily mean they enjoy it. Think of the many people who must endure embarassing jobs in order to pay the bills. They work by their own free will, but, nevertheless, they may still hate it.

As for the 'photography session', I guess I understand what you mean. I think I just imagined it to be a little more perverted.
If they're simply posing from a distance, I guess that would make a little more sense... (But still a little weird)

I think the real "upside" to visiting a Maid Cafe would be that (a) you have a place to meet people of similar interests, (b) you get to eat/drink and (c) you are surrounded by young women in dresses whose primary objective is to please you (which, if you're a guy, it shouldn't be hard to sense the significance).
