smoking cigs

is smoking a big problem with japan's middle-high school people?

DomesticatedWolf 11-15-2008 05:19 AM

i think smoking is a big problem everywhere including japan. Now they put like those horrifying pictures on cigarettes pack so people stop smoking which kinda works for me, they'll put pictures like dead babies, cemetery, a flaccid male reproductive organ. Japan middle high school kids are mostly social smoker.

MMM 11-15-2008 05:20 AM

Now that you have to have ID to buy even from vending machines, and prices have gone up, I don't think it is as big a problem as it was 20 years ago.

superheel 11-15-2008 05:23 AM

Smoking is just not good and not cool. Period.

DomesticatedWolf 11-15-2008 05:32 AM

It is uncool but media nowadays they playing with our minds trapping us to think that cigarette is cool and at the same time saying that cigarette is hazardous. So kids they'll picture it like this ''Cigarette is cool and if i smoke people will think i'm a rebel''.

That is true. But we should be smart enough to know what smoking would do to us. I just hate it how some guys do it just because they think it's cool and it'll make them more manly.

Nyororin 11-15-2008 07:48 AM

The problem has decreased quite rapidly over the last few years. Smoking is no longer "cool", and is seen by a lot of younger people as a waste of money they could be saving or using somewhere else.

This, thankfully, is the same in the US. 10 packs of cigarettes is the same price as a new console game.

GodNickSatan 11-15-2008 08:55 AM

But you can buy 10 packs of cigarettes and sell them to underage school kids for double the price, and then buy two new console games. :p

underage school kids don't have 10 dollars to pay for a pack of cigs.

Suki 11-15-2008 10:28 AM

10 dollars? A pack of cigs? Damn.

And then you can be arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and be fined enough money to buy 50 console games, as well as spend a few days in jail, and get a few years of probation to boot.

Alright, expanding on the issue. I dont smoke cigarettes, I find them stinky and unsatisfying, but I do smoke cigars. If/when I go there, am I going to get any flack for it? I know some french people that smoke like fiends but when I lite up my Rocky Patel they get in my face about how bad it is. I love my hand rolled cigars and smoke at least 1 a week, I can go a long time without a good meal but the elegant aroma of a pefectly rolled bit of pure Hondurian tobacco leaf is a comfort well worth the price.

Smoking cigars is rare in Japan, so you will get some sideways looks. There are cigar bars in Tokyo, Kobe and Osaka, and I am sure other cities and there are high-end vendors, as well (Cubans!). Some international hotels have cigar bars (Think "Lost in Translation") as well.

Ok, now I'm excited. I managed to get my hands on one in the Caribbean and compared to that everything else is second rate (with the possible exception of the Rocky Patel Decade Torpedo).

Cigars in Tokyo - Japan | cigarjapan.com

The prices on the left are for Cubans.

I'm happy that they banned smoking out of restaurants and café's in Holland.
It used to spoil a lot of fun when i went out sins my body cant really handle smoke well.
I guess thats not the case in Japan?
And yeah you can spend your money way better on otter things then cigarettes.

It's moving that way in Japan, but they still have a long way to go.

wilsontheterrible 11-15-2008 09:03 PM

Thanks for the link, the prices are a bit steep but hey, I can't complain. Its not like I can get them here anyway. But at those prices I can see why most Japanese dont indulge.

In reguards to banning smoking in restaurants, as a man who enjoys smoking in polite company I dread the day I will be forced to take up my hobby in overpriced Cigar Cafe's, but from an outside perspective I can understand why its happening. Despite the best attempts to control smoke with vents and filters our toxic smog will always find its way to the nonsmokers, ah well thats what balconies and storefronts are for :D .

Tyrien 11-15-2008 09:12 PM

I'm actually extremely tempted to go out and buy a pack right now with the day I've been having.

superheel 11-15-2008 09:15 PM

Here in my school, Freshmen kids would bring cigars and smoke it in the restroom. They are actually proud out of it.

Tyrien 11-15-2008 09:48 PM

Cigars are different that cigarettes. I know the massive amounts of anti-smoking hype have brainwashed you into thinking that anything involving smoke going into your mouth is pure satan incarnate but there are distinctions you must be aware of.

Cigars do not have nicotine in them, and are not meant to be inhaled like cigarettes. It's an acquired taste, classy among some. Why there's kids in your school who think it makes them cool though, is beyond me.

MMM 11-15-2008 10:18 PM

Cigars are made from tobacco, and certainly have nicotine. You do not inhale into your lungs, but that doesn't mean they are risk-free.

Why kids would smoke cigars in the bathroom is a mystery to me.

wilsontheterrible 11-15-2008 11:02 PM

Those kids must be loaded, that or they're buying the cheap gas station ones like swishers sweets. In which case its not that different from a run of the mill cigarette.

But cigar's are not without risk. While a cigar smoker is significantly less likely to get lung cancer they are more likely to get mouth or throat cancer because of the tendency to hold the smoke inside the mouth to analyze the flavor. And cigar's do have nicotine, because of the massive ammount of tobacco in each cigar there is roughly a packs worth in just one cigar. The difference being that less is absorbed into your system because you dont inhale cigar smoke.

I just ant to say this, i really have no plans to bring my straight edge beliefs here but i just cant stand it. Smoking is for losers.

A lot of people smoke no matter where you live, and yes, you can get them from vending machines in Japan. But smoking in Japan--and Asia in general--is more common with middle-aged men.
