Have you been to Italy? - 12-20-2008, 01:25 PM

I know this is not a Japan Related Question, But it is something I would like to know. Have you ever been to Italy? If so what is Italy like and what is the food like? Can you get by there without knowing Italian? I would like to go there someday for a visit. It would also be interesting to receive responses from Italians. Let me know what you think, thank you.

Italy is a beautiful country! I'd recommend it to anyone. Only thing... you'll never like italian food in England after you eat it in Italy! It's on a whole different level of deliciousness (if that word even exists, lol). Pizza is nothing like what you get in the normal take aways (Pizza hut, domino's etc). I cannot stress how nice the food is. Even the hot chocolates at the ski resort I went to was amazing... REAL CHOCOLATE, lol!

Anyway, if you ever get a chance to go, GO! And, you needn't worry about the language. You can get by easily with some common sense. And people will understand names of places if you say them in English! Some places, like Venice, seem to have more English speakers than Italian, lol!

Yeah, you'll get by just fine with English. I love Italian food, it's so good you're gonna be crying your eyes out when the time comes for you to leave the country lol

I've been to Rome (+ Vatican City), Florence, Pisa, Bergamno and Siena. God bless cheap international flights!! xD

I've been to Rome in Italy. The summer weather and the food are fantastic, and there's a lot more to Italian cuisine than pizza, lasagne and spaghetti! As for the language, it is probably better to know at least some phrases in Italian rather than speaking English the whole time.

Thank you all for your responses! Yes I want to go to Italy for sure one day. I love Italian food but I have only tried Italian food that I have made. I know it will taste a lot different in Italy. If I do go I will learn some Italian. Suki: Thank you for the link
