I'm not into those big OMG I hate you, you kill the whales people. At the same time I'm a bit worried about how them becoming extinct is going to affect us in the long run.

Would it really affect us? I mean, do they have specific role in running how the systems work? OR can something else do what they can too?

I think the reaons are more to do with the price of fish!

I also think it's the cruel way of killing them that tends to attract, or is that just publicity?

God bloody knows how you are supposed to kill such a large ocean creature humanely, or does not the word humane relate to a whale?

Fair enough question, but I honestly don't know hence the 'bit worried' part. The only obvious one I can give you is that extinction would mean you're wiping out something you use for food, oil, cosmetics - it wouldn't make sense to kill them all if you think about it. As for the ecosystem I know they eat plankton/krill but I'm not sure what those do in the large scheme of things. Maybe too many unbalances things?

If someone put whale on a plate infront of me, I'd eat it.

Alot more places than Japan eat horse too, when I was young I tried horse meat when I was in france. I can't remember what it was like though.

The effect that the extinction of whales would have on the environment is immeasurable. So many variables to calculate.

The eco-system is like a game of Jenga (the game played with a wooden block tower where each player takes a piece of the block away without the tower crubling). Take out one piece and it could have drastic effect... or not.

I don't think so.

The extinction of an entire species ranks higher on my "outrage list" rather than the actions of a few extremists. Especially when I sympathise with the cause of these extremists.

True. Everything is (was) well balanced before humans started to f¾ck things up. I'm not saying I don't have a role in this, but it just sickens me to see how the world is losing it's natural balance gradually.

I understand what you are saying, but this means getting rid of medication and letting animals eat us XD

I meant the ecosystems. Animals can't eat us if we protect ourselves from them. People hunt them, destroy their habitat and poison them to the point at which they are almost or entirely vanished from the face of the earth. All for the sake of consumers and materialism.
