I also think 和 is the best exact word to symbolize Japan.

However, I recommend to use 気 as the theme of the essay because many people will write essay over 和 and it would be difficult to differenciate your essay against others'.

Thanks for your opinions everyone. I've heard 和 somewhere before too, so i think i will go with that. Got to investigate some more before i can give accurate reasons for it though
