Japanese Mobile Phones - 05-26-2009, 11:04 PM

I've just seen a Top Gear (UK car programme) where they go to Japan and do a race. At one point, one of the presenters gets told off for using a his mobile phone on the train...

Just out of interest, are there any restrictions as to where you can and cannot use your mobile in public places in Japan?

It is considered bad manners to use a cell phone in most areas of shinkansen and most other trains. You are supposed to go to the ends of the cars between the seating areas. Not everyone does, of course.

From the sky, To the ground
Rain is falling all around
Thunder rain and wind
A song of storms begins

Play a song, A melody
Then everybody will see
The hero of time
Has come

It's considered impolite to talk on your phone in the train and on the bus. Hence the reason why everyone is always texting on their phone. It's also asked that you turn off your phone at the ends of the train which are used by senior/handicapped passengers.

The Shinkansen has a designated area to use your phone between each train segment.

Yes, as other's, I would often see the train guard on Hankyu Kyoto instructing passengers to switch off..

If people's phone rang, they would often get out of their seat with full respect for other passengers, and go to a corner face in the speak.

I think that's a very good thing. I hate it when people start talking really loud in the bus or train !

Me too! London trains and buses are so bad. People talk at the top of their voices and let the whole world know what they're talking about! Sometimes it can be funny, but it's mostly annoying.

I wish it was the case here.
