In days when on a fortress hundreds tons of killing iron have collapsed, advocates have been forced to leave under land. In serf cellarages. To the beginning of the Second World War of the VTR of the Great Britain considerably exceeded the VTR of Germany. In 1941 - the beginning of 1942 Japan has captured Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Burma. The war fracture on Pacific ocean has occurred during sea battle for Midway islands. The Japanese fleet has lost four aeroplane carriers, fleet of the USA - one aeroplane carrier.
In 1941-1942 the kernel of an Antihitlerite coalition (the USSR, the Great Britain and the USA) was added.
On November, 8th, 1942 operation "Torch" (Torch) starts. The English-Ameriknsky landing is jolted in the North Africa. Operations against army and fleet of Vishijsky France, and in an aftereffect of African tank Vermahta under command of general Rommelja have started. The culmination was battle for Kasserinsky pass.
January 1943 - June 1944
Victories of Red Army in Stalingradsky battle (1942-1943), Kursk battle (1943) and battle for Dnepr (1943) have marked a fracture during the Second World War. By May, 1943 Anglo-American troops have released the North Africa. In July, 1943 the fascist regime in Italy which in October has declared war Germany has failed. In 1944-1945 Anglo-American troops have seized Mariana Islands, Philippines and the Japanese island Okinawa.
May 1945 - September 1945
The Berlin conference of heads of the governments of the USSR, the USA and the Great Britain (on July, 17th - on August, 2nd, 1945, Potsdam) has defined conditions of a post-war peace arrangement in Europe.
On the Japanese cities of Hiroshimas (on August, 6th, 1945) and Nagasaki (on August, 9th) have been dumped atomic bombs. On August, 9th 1945 Soviet Union has declared war Japan, the Soviet troops have routed the Japanese Kvantunsky army, have released Northeast China, the North Korea, Southern Sakhalin and Kuriles. On September, 2nd, 1945 Japan has signed act of unconditional surrender.
Statistics
In the countries participating in the Second World War, it has been mobilised about 110 million persons. In war has perished by different estimations from 45 to 65 million persons, from them 27 (on informal data in 1,5 - 2 times are more) million inhabitants of Soviet Union.

"American history is bogus"? I suppose none of use here have heard of the lend/lease program which was set up between America and the Soviet Union to supply Soviet soldiers with aircraft and weapons. More than $10 billion dollars (from the US alone, more from other allies) in weapons were supplied to the Soviets, including 14,000 aircraft.

It's easy enough to see that the Soviet Union was dependent on the allies for the weapons and materials to continue fighting the war, particularly after the crushing losses of such items in the opening months after the Germans attacked.

Tell me again how great the Soviet Union was, and how they were the ones responsible for winning the war against Germany.

Sometimes I wonder where foreigners get the idea they know so much about what people are taught in other countries. If you were not educated there you have no basis for comment on it. Now more to the point raised initially.

An author who calls to attention the British tendency to focus on those commemorations and ask for reflection is one worth reading. I don't entirely agree with all the assertions, but for the most part the thrust of the article seems valid.

I really have only one serious discomfort with it. Referring to Stalin's actions as "rescue" of anyone is poor and misleading phrasing. Stalin did nothing but further his own megalomanicial aims. It may be viewed as a recue by those few who survived him, but since most were executed one wayor another after Stalin stopped his rival that really was not a rescue. He did not "rescue" Poland (which Churchill lied to in person as he agreed to abandon them!). He stole it from its native people and slaughtered it for his own ego - just as he did everywhere he could.

And for the record, when it comes to Americans and what they are taught about the Warsaw Pact and its negotiations is NOT what the non-American here stated. Out history classes are more even handed than some assume. What the student later chooses to retain may be another matter.

One other comment for the record.

Even in American history classes an effort is made to convey an understanding of how the pilots who attacked Pearl Harbor viewed their duty. Even though they are depicted as agressors, they are not depicted as the crazy monsters which some claim.

But your infantry needs bullets, clothes, food, and many other things besides. How else could the Soviet Army hold off the Germans? By throwing stones?

In World War 2 the equipment was the deciding factor. The Germans surrendered after the battle of Stalingrad only because they didn't have the supplies to continue. Firstly, the Germans penetrated into the Soviet Union too quickly for their supplies to catch up, and the long distance between Germany and Stalingrad (nearly 1000 miles) made the supply line difficult to secure and open to attack. As a result of the lack of supplies, the German attack faltered, and the German soldiers had to endure a Russian winter for which they were ill-prepared. This delay gave the Soviet Army time to regroup and reorganize, and the rest is history.

And the last fact, we can't forget that Germany and the Soviet Union were allies (both having signed the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, or German-Soviet pact), before Hitler betrayed the pact, and invaded. People don't seem to realize that the Nazi Germans were Socialists (National Socialists, or Nazi for short). As part of this pact, Germany was to supply the Soviet Union with manufactured goods, whilst the Soviets were to supply Germany with the raw materials it needed to conduct it's war.

As a result of this alliance, and with the approval of Hitler, the Soviet Army occupied Eastern Poland, and militarily invaded Finland. The Soviets then occupied the Baltic States, and took Northern Romania as well.

Truth is and this is a fact: Russia defeated a larger and more advanced part of Nazi (google for 'Waffen SS'). Also, Germany had around 80% of the concentration on the eastern front.

If Germany had sent the same amount of troops (also the best) in Wester front (in other words if it was the other way it happened), Normandy would have been a large failure for USA. And Russia would have gained on the eastern side easily, also a lot less deaths.

Once again, who fed the Soviet Soldiers so they could continue fighting the Germans? It wasn't the Soviet Union. Who made the bullets that were used to shoot the Germans? It wasn't the Soviet Union. Who made the radios, telephones, batteries, and wire so the Soviet Forces could communicate? It wasn't the Soviet Union.

The Soviet Soldiers had little choice but to push ahead and fight the Germans, their officers kept machine guns pointed at them. If the Soviet Soldiers didn't keep up their attacks on the Germans, they risked being shot by their own officers.

Do you know why fewer US soldiers died? Because they were free men with rights, equal to those of their commanders. As such, they were treated and cared for as well as possible, properly fed, properly armed, and used with care.

Do you know why so many Soviet Soldiers died? Because they were peasants, expendable fodder considered less valuable than the weapons they carried. Many of them starved because they weren't properly fed, or died of disease because they weren't properly treated, or were killed in combat because they had no weapons to fight with. In big infantry assaults there were large numbers of unarmed Soviet Soldiers, as there were not enough guns to go around. And for those few guns, there were even less bullets. These unarmed soldiers had no choice but to attack, if they didn't they would be killed by their own commanders.

Let's not forget that those same peasants had to charge German guns unarmed because the "Soviet" Officers would shoot them if they didn't.

This is all a pretty big generalization, Tenchu. I'm an American and I attended public school. In no way was the important of Russia during WWII, or the world in general, underplayed.

This is more of a stab at America than an analysis of World War II.

I can't really comment on the American education (because I've never had one), but I form my opinion based on the end result; the attitudes of the majority of Americans.

I'm getting the feeling that because of the power struggle played by American and Russia in the Cold War, the opinion and views of the Soviets and Stalin is very negative and there's a deep sewn hatred for communism that isn't really based on reality, just patriotic propaganda put out by American power-houses.

America is generally so self centered, and official views of China and Russia and communism in general are so negative, they're not going to take any steps to try and idolize the actions of any communists, even if it means dumbing down the truth.

What you said may have been true in the past, thanks to Joe McCarthy and the Red Scare, but today the disdain for Russia and China is due less in part to Communism (which doesn't exist in either country anymore), and more due to the corruption and violations of human rights that occur in those countries.

I'm genuinely curious where your highly negative opinion of Americans come from. You've never had anything good to say about them ever since you've been on these forums. Have you really met that many Americans in person to form a solid opinion on them? Those silly surveys they conduct with Americans on The Chaser's War on Everything and other popular European/Australian programs are heavily edited and very unrepresentative. We aren't all flag-waving idiots who are bad at geography, mate.

Once I got a book written by Ian Kershaw on Hitler. It was supposed to be the best ever written.

They're pretty good to other fellow Americans, regardless of race or religion. But the difference between American and China pretty much ends there. They're just as shocking in a war with war crimes. They treat animals like s***. Companies are full of corruption. These are the most common few things people dislike China for, yet America does them all too.

I mean, I know individual Americans often dislike this stuff, but it's the goverment that does, as is in China. But when it's China's government doing it, it seems the entire nation is to blame. But when the US government does it, it's a frowned upon "scandal" where the only people accountable are the ones who were there and did it themselves.

I think this views around because of some kind of selfish thing again; they know them as a person would never do such a horrible thing, so they think they're not a part of it, i.e. it isn't Americas fault, it's George Bush's fault, as an individual. But unable to think of others, where George Bush is currupt, the entire nation of China is to blame for the same things.

It's hard to say anyone's right in such a mess, but it's the smart thing to do is not be biased, look at what's really happening and why, and when you tell someone else about the event, tell them the truth, not your view of it, as you're not watching from the pristine perspective, no one is.
