Why do Japanese hang balls wrapped in net from ceilings outside?

I've never been to Japan, but after watching a few Japanese movies/shows I couldn't help but notice that I saw the same thing in more than one unrelated video.

Does anyone what these things are?

I've seen a few times these balls wrapped in nets being hung from the ceiling.

Does anyone else do this? And why?

Also, are the balls made from rubber? Or glass? (because when I translated the website of the first image, it mentioned 'glass ball', but I figured it might be a translation error).

Glass fishing floats. My grandpa used to do that as well.

Hi, thanks for the reply, but I still don't understand why people hang them from ceilings. Is it to scare birds away?

I'm pretty positive it's just for decor.

They WERE used to keep nets afloat (before plastic floats) but now they are collector items.

Thanks everyone! The curiosity/confusion was starting to drive me crazy.

I can now sleep.

Bye.
