What are some decent colleges in Japan? - 07-26-2010, 08:13 PM

I am about to start my freshman year of college and though I have looked through the official report of foreign student exchange (http://www.mext.go.jp/a_menu/koutou/...020201/001.pdf), I don't have a clear understanding of which colleges are more prestigious and which are more or less directed to software/computer engineering than other fields.

I was told that colleges in japan have some great programs for computer science/robotics more so than the US. Would it, as far as job opportunities abroad and locally, benefit me more to work towards attending graduate school in japan versus the us (I am currently in line to get a full scholarship from Georgia tech for my graduate degree)?

Any other opinion or thoughts are welcome too

EDIT: Also, how do you get your custom avatar to show?

If you are going to get a full ride at Georgia Tech, take it. Japan isn't going anywhere.

Yeah.

Coming to Japan to study < Full ride back home.

As for changing your avatar, I think you need to meet the minimum 25 posts to become a "regular."

If robotics is what you are into, I would think Japanese would be the language to study.

Do japanese companies pay more for english speaking employees? I can't think of very many us companies that would.

Only if it's relevant to the position being offered. If it's not, then no. In fact, in many areas of employment English language ability isn't a criteria at all; as a foreigner looking for work in Japan the two main things they want are a) all the same credentials an employer outside Japan would look for in an employee, and 2) excellent native-level business japanese.

I really can't imagine you getting anywhere in a technical field with 0 Japanese, and be aware that a full-time college degree in Japanese won't give you 'native-level ability' by any means.
